From The Helm What a night it was, the 2010 Change of Watch. Ninety-nine members and guests feasted on Chef Peter’s fabulous dinner then witnessed Peter Reiske conduct the installation of the newly elected Flag Officers and Directors. Also attending were the Commodores of South Milwaukee Yacht Club and Racine Yacht Club as well as the past Commodore of Waukegan Yacht Club. While being elected to a second term as your Commodore is a very humbling honor, the highlight of the evening for me was presenting the 2010 Al & Erv Nickel Memorial Award to a very deserving Dave Blomberg. It’s always a delight when the recipient is truly surprised and Dave was. The committee had no difficulty in selecting Dave for the honor. The Club Handbook lists Dave on only three committees but he certainly should be listed on many more because he always ready and willing to serve when ever there’s a need. After the ceremonies everyone enjoyed the music of DUSK in the Lakeside Lounge.
I’d also made the committee Chairmanship selections for 2011 and there are a few changes. Here’s the list:
ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES
OPERATING COMMITTEES
ACTIVITY COMMITTEES
I’d also like to personally thank the ‘retiring’ members of your Board; Recording Secretary Michael Dukes PC, Treasurer Gary Mattson PC and Director Mike Blackwood. SSYC has certainly benefited from their years of service and will continue to count on their wise counsel.
Declining membership is an issue facing all organizations including SSYC. To our credit (Tom Gale membership Chairman) we’ve added 23 active members this year. That’s a move in the right direction but we have to continue our efforts. Skippers, recruit your crew members who always seem to be here at SSYC enjoying the benefit of your membership.
What’s happening in 2013? We’re celebrating our 100th Anniversary. I’ll be having an ‘organizational’ meeting for a 100th Anniversary Committee very soon, watch for an e-mail announcing the date and time of the meeting.
Now to what’s going on around us. We’ve just had the annual grounds turn-over work party. Thanks to the 50 + members and spouses that finished all the tasks in record time, with the exception of the Garden Committee. Pat Rakowski’s garden committee members worked long into the afternoon to get the gardens prepared for winter and lookin’ good. Haul out is nearly complete after a great season and we’ll all be working on and around the boats and grounds please be careful, tie down those ladders, wear a lifejacket while on the docks and keep the area around your boat free of debris.
Oh yeah, it’s also fun time at your Club, Packers Sundays, lots of theme nights, parties and ‘shake of the day’. Be part of the fun here at SSYC.
No - Wake Ordinanceby Dave Tucholka, PCAt a meeting at City Hall in Milwaukee on Wednesday, October 20 a request for the continuance of the No - Wake ordinance in the Outer Harbor of Milwaukee during special events as determined by the Harbor Master of Milwaukee was heard. Typically, the dates coincide with an Air Show, Big Bang Fireworks and Summerfest Fireworks. City of Milwaukee Alderman Tony Zelinski sponsored the ordinance and the continuance at the request of Milwaukee's Yacht Clubs and LMYA. The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works Safety Commission.heard input from all policing organizations and yacht clubs. Passage of the request to continue the ordinance on a permanent basis will be presented to the full Milwaukee Common Council for their approval at the next regularly scheduled meeting. ![]() (From left to right, Keith Ponath (LMYA), Tony Zelinski (Alderman), Dave Tucholka,PC (SSYC) and Wayne Happel (LMYA).
Please note that three people attending the meeting are also SSYC members.

Another issue we discussed is the most popular shake of the day during the winter months. Last year members were able to shake for each bartender working. This year the rules will be changing due to the fact we had so many winners and the bar was taking a big loss. This year you will only be able to play the game one time each day. The Wednesday night programs will be starting on January 26, 2011. Please check the calendar and e-mails for information about the upcoming programs. The final item the committee tackled was the budget for 2011. We're well aware that we are below our 550 members we enjoyed several years ago. Because of this the House Committee needed to lower our proposed budget as best as we can. It was decided that in 2011 there will be no requests for improvement projects. We will certainly address clubhouse issues or problems as they arise. To help keep our club clean and presentable we will be scheduling the club cleanup work party sometime in January or February of 2011. I would like to thank every club member that volunteers their time to make this club the best it can be.

Grounds Committee Report
As we turn the grounds over to winter storage be aware that there are a lot of things going on. Keep your eyes open for items left on the ground or things hanging down from boats. Keep in mind that there will be people who are working above you, so also look up. We all need to keep things picked up and trash thrown away. We had a small work party and fixed the front fence by the Junior Cub House so it is not leaning against the any longer. Scot Dryburgh and Jerry Kedziora were the volunteers for that project. The tent take down went well with Peter Hasse directing that group. The grounds work party on Sat Oct. 9th also went well. It is held to get the grounds ready for the winter storage of boats. Some other projects were also worked on and completed. There was a good turnout and a lunch was served for the volunteers. I would like to thank everyone that has helped out this season. Every little bit of help keeps our Club moving forward. The grounds looked good this summer. The Grounds Gardening Sub- Committee headed by Pat Rakowski did a great job of taking over the gardening and is preparing for next year. From Pat Rakowski: The Garden Committee would like to thank all those who helped with cleaning the gardens for winter. A special thanks to Mike Foy for wintering over some of our plants. Mike is a crewman on Sabotage. Thanks Mike!! Haul Out![]() Helpful Hints for Haul Out

Last month’s meeting featured Ken and Sandy Dziubek’s worldwide sailing adventures. Ken and Sandy are well respected racers and their knowledge of what it takes to embark on sailing around the world was breathtaking. The logistics, the weather considerations, political ramifications could put up a big roadblock for success but they were able to work through all the obstacles and realize the dream of sailing around the world. We hope to have them back for an encore presentation … they don’t know this yet but it’s on the wish list of members who heard the presentation and those who wished they had been there to hear the presentation. Looking ahead to next month, we will have our competent financial secretary Teri Mueller Our November meeting will have nomination and election of Officers and Board of Directors. If you would like to volunteer for one of the positions, please talk to Fran Aring. We will also talk about Auxiliary business, changes coming to the club, and donations the Auxiliary participates in yearly. Hope to see everyone in attendance. Your participation makes for a much better club. Many hands make for light work and more fun to go around, as could be seen at the work party on Saturday, October 9th. Remember that our meetings start at 7:00 pm with light snacks or desserts to be enjoyed before the meeting. For meetings when dinner is involved, meetings start at 6.00 pm. Those 6:00 pm meetings would be the December Holiday dinner, the May Life/Past Presidents Dinner, the June Picnic and the October Shipmates Night . If you have suggestions for next year’s entertainment, please contact Entertainment Chair Sue Ring-Wagner .

Cruising Club Update
by Don Doggett, Fleet co-Captain Another great cruising trip was had by all on August 28th, 2010 on our way to Port Washington. Sailing vessels Witchcraft, Mariah, and Whisper all gathered at 10:00am on a gusty but sunny Saturday morning to head off on a down wind run due north. It was an exciting sail, broad reaching and surfing the whole way. As we arrived in Port in record time, we noticed that slips were becoming a precious commodity and all cruisers joined in a game of VHF musical slips where we truly got a tour of the entire marina. While Frank from Mariah is often quoted as saying “I never met a boat I didn’t like”, I feel like even he wasn’t overly joyous about the surprise boats occupying his reserved transient slip. Eventually we were all able to find an available slip to call home for the night.Tying up in the new floating docks was a breeze and we all spent time relaxing on the hard before meeting up for dinner at Newport Shores. Everyone enjoyed a warm breezy sunset on the outdoor patio while listening to great covers by the Pointer Brothers musicians. As the sun set, the cruisers split into smaller groups to explore the town and then head back to slumber in their cozy cabins. We all left early before the morning wind on an upwind beat back to SSYC and had a wonderful trip home as the south winds built but brought everyone home before they became too unmanageable. Sadly this was the last of the cruising club journeys for 2010 since the plans to travel in September were cancelled due to high winds and unseasonable chilliness that came early this year. So if you want to catch up on any good stories about the adventures, the South Shore Cruising and Cocktail Club is having a Wrap Up Party on October 28. We're planning on holding it in the SSYC dining room upstairs to relax and share all the sail tales of where we went this summer. We’ll be sending out more details closer to the 28th, but mark your calendars and plan to Wrap Up with the Cruisers! "On Board" - Boating Safety Tipsby Gerald HussinRadar and the Rules of the Road RADAR on small boats has become another necessary electronic tool to be used to enhance safety at sea. Most operators have it installed and turn it on and depend on it to be their eyes in limited visibility. Training in plotting is essential to understand what exactly you are viewing on the screen. Radar can also be difficult to interpret with distortions, clutter and multiple echoes that may confuse an operator.Radar may be quick to indicate a large freighter, but very difficult to pick out a fiber glass boat. Remember – RADAR is not a substitute for a human lookout, a person watching and listening in limited visibility. Experience is very important for proper use and understanding information on the screen, don’t forget – common sense. Radar can offer a false sense of security to an inexperienced operator. The Rules state – for large and recreational boats – requires that Radar – if fitted and operational – shall be used properly to determine if the risk of collision exists. Proper use indicates –radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detected objects. Rule 7, Safe Risk of Collision Proper use shall be made of radar equipment if fitted and operational, including long range scanning to obtain early warning of risk of collision and radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detached objects. Assumptions shall not be made on the basis of scanty information, especially scanty radar information. In other words – during limited visibility, Radar, if it works, must be on and the operator must know how to use it. Excerpted from Boat US Helping Handsby Carolyn Nason As the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, thoughts turn to putting our boats away for winter. Don’t forget to tuck a few dryer sheets in the drawers and cupboards of your boat to keep that musty smell at bay. Not a bad idea, too, to put them in the bottom of your wastebaskets. So you bought a new pair of boots for the upcoming dreaded winter? If they’re just a bit too tight, fill a couple heavy-duty re-sealable plastic freezer bags with water and put them in your boots. Put your boots in a kitchen garbage bag and pop in the freezer for 24 hours. As the water freezes, it expands, stretching your boots with it. Just remember to thaw before removing the bags. A great use for rubber bands: Slip one around your shampoo and conditioner bottles. They’ll never slip out of your wet hands again. Oh, and don’t forget you can use a rubber band as a bookmark. Wrap it around the book lengthwise and it won’t fall out. Does your vinyl floor curl up? Reseal it using an iron and a paper grocery bag. The bag prevents the heat from melting the vinyl but will allow the glue to turn to liquid. Place a heavy object on top overnight and you should be good to go. Like to shop online? Clear your “cookies” so you appear to be a first-timer to their site. You may come across some real “rock-bottom” deals. Having trouble remembering things? Try connecting an emotion to it. For example, you have to pick up your dress at the cleaners, imagine how embarrassed you’d feel if you showed up at the party in jeans. It works because it creates an additional path for your mind to use. Finally, PC Bob Aring (Bacchus) forwards these great tips about cucumbers. Next time you’re feeling tired in the afternoon try noshing on some cucumber. It’s a good source of B Vitamins and carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. It’s also great for avoiding both a hangover and a headache if you can remember to eat a few slices before you go to bed. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium. As always, keep your hints coming.
Great Lakes Marine Collection of the Milwaukee Public Library
by Sharon Cook
In the Frank Zeidler Humanities Room of the Milwaukee Public Library, lies an incredible collection of Great Lakes Marine History. The Library, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society, collects, records, preserves and disseminates materials relating to the Great Lakes. Herman Runge bequeathed his entire collection to the library in 1958….much of his records about vessels is now digitized and available online through the library. Among the items in the collection are Great Lakes vessel files (some including photos), Great Lakes Marine Magazines and Journals, Directories, marine subject files, nautical charts going back to the 1800’s, federal documents and vessel enrollments. Some of the materials are available online at www.mpl.org/ship. That site will also instruct you on access to items in the collection at the Central Library at 814 West Wisconsin Avenue. |
