Nominating Committee The major item of business at our September general Membership meeting will be the election of Officers and Directors for 2011. The Nominating Committee has met and is recommending the following slate of Flag Officers to the membership:
For terms as Directors the recomendations are: Director Russ Berg re-elected to a three year term to expire in 2013 Director Ken Dziubek re-elected to a three year term to expire in 2013 Richard Trisco elected to a three year term to expire in 2013 Peter Engle elected to a two year term to fill unexpired term of Director Robert Aring The Nominating Committee members are the four immediate past SSYC Commodores and two Life members elected from the floor at the September Membership Meeting. The 'elected members' may not currently be serving as Flag Officers or members of the Board of Directors. From The Helm Sitting here at the laptop trying to recover from the Corn Roast brings home the fact that there’s less than ten days left in August. We wait so long for our boating season to begin, and then it seems to just pass in the blink of an eye. However these past several weeks have been great times to be out on the water. I hope that you’ve been on your boat or at least thinking about boating more times than you can remember. Speaking of the Corn Roast, we haven’t broken down the numbers yet and while it appears that attendance might have been down a bit this year (I personally know at least four members who usually attend with friends and neighbors who had to attend family weddings) a great time was had and even a very brief shower didn’t dampen the evening for the 400 plus attendees. We brought in six new members in the past month. Please welcome Jeremy Burns, David Oglesby, Bruce Scott, Larry King, Greg Gaitens and Jory Hanson. Our membership is still below our planned budgeted number and should be a concern of all of us. Skippers talk up SSYC membership to your crew members who’ve been enjoying SSYC all summer long and everyone should be bragging about the good times year round here and what a bargain membership is. Even with September looming there’s plenty of events coming up, Margarita Night, three more Wednesday night sail races, the Powerboater’s cruise to Racine, the Labor Day Car Show, the Port Washington Sail Rendezvous, Grudge Regatta, day trip Gambling Get-a-way, first ever Fish Boil and probably a few more I’ve overlooked. Several important dates to mark on your calendars, Thursday, September 16 is the Fall General Membership Meeting. The election of Flag Officers and three Directors is always held at that meeting. Read the Nominating Committees report elsewhere in this Compass. There will also be a separate “Call To The Meeting” notice mailed out. Four other important dates to note are: October 9; Change of Watch Banquet, November 6; Sail Race Winner’s Dinner, November 13; Powerboater’s Ball and of course December 31; New Year’s Eve Celebration. Look for e-mails and posters for these and other events and plan to attend. Entertainment Committee Report Our Annual Corn Roast was again an event to be remembered. The dedication and hard work of the volunteers and club staff are the reason that SSYC can maintain an event for well over 30 years. Their patience (especially with me) and knowledge is key to the success of such a large undertaking year after year. The Entertainment Committee is currently planning a first ever ‘Door County’ style fish boil to be held on October 2. For this event the committee has decided to extend an invitation to the neighborhood. Over the years the immediate blocks surrounding the club have been reinvigorated with many new faces. Many of these new residents are younger families who have either come back to Bay View or are completely new to the neighborhood. We all are aware of the importance that SSYC has had in the boating community since our founding, but what may sometimes get lost is the huge importance SSYC has had in the Bay View neighborhood. Generations of young Bay View residents become familiar with boating and the water through SSYC and it is with pride that SSYC is still around in 2010 to offer this same opportunity to many of the families who have recently arrived in the neighborhood and just haven’t had the invite to come on down and check out all that SSYC has to offer. Please check your emails for further info on this event and again thank you to all the volunteers and staff who have made every event this year a wonderful success! 2010 Fish On Fish Off Fishing Contest The Sixth Annual Fish On Fish Off fishing contest between South Shore Yacht Club and South Milwaukee Yacht is history. The weather did not co-operate on the scheduled contest date of July 24th. Because of the heavy rains the fishing conditions became very poor in our area. Because of the lake's unsafe conditions and poor fishing conditions, the contest was rescheduled for the following weekend July 31st. Again on July 31st we had rain storms go through our area, so the boats were postponed one half hour from the original start time of 4:30 am. As the day progressed the rain left our area and the contest continued until the boats returned by 12 noon to weigh in their catch. There were 17 boats registered to fish in the contest this year. South Milwaukee Yacht Club had 9 boats participating, and South Shore Yacht Club registered 8 boats to participate. Over the last few years the fishing has been very slow on Lake Michigan. All of the Captains were hoping for a good catch this year. The rules of the contest allowed the boats to leave the dock at 4:30 a.m. and the fishing started at 5:00 a.m. All of the participants in the contest had to register their fish at the South Shore dock before 12 noon. After weighing the fish and enjoying a fantastic lunch the final results were calculated. ![]() 1st Place- Captain Jim Dunham on E Z Rider from SMYC with 148 points. 2nd Place- Captain. Rich Klamrowski on Klam’s Chowder from SMYC with 141 points. 3rd Place- Captain Dan Gall on R Toys from SSYC with 127 points. 4th Place- Captain Mike Gengler on Knot Too Shabby from SMYC with 114 points. The biggest fish of the contest was a 17.2 lbs Chinook salmon caught by Jim Buss on Fish On from South Milwaukee Yacht Club. There was a total of 454.6 lbs. of fish caught during the event. After calculating the points of the top five boats from each club, the winner of the traveling trophy was once again South Milwaukee Yacht Club with a total of 601.2 points to South Shore Yacht Club's 329 points. I would like to thank all of the volunteers from SSYC and SMYC that help make this event successful Race Committee News South Shore Special Races
South Shore Yacht Club is home to a lot of special races. Not just the highly competitive blood on the deck races, but some nice gentile events open to all. SSYC is the only yacht club that has these crazy events. One such event is the P/S’R. Contrived at our SSYC bar by two brothers (one a sailor and one a power boater) who wanted an event that all boaters could participate in and have fun without any documents or complex rules. It has been refined over the years by Mike Dziubek with the support Joy Dziubek and various others. It starts as a poker run that has the skipper of a sailboat driving the power boat (while the owner is onboard, of course). The object is to navigate the power boat close enough to some poor soul that has a sealed envelope and the end of 10’ piece of PVC pipe. There are three card stations on the water and two cards on land. The best poker hand wins the morning event. After a boater’s lunch, the skipper of the power boat helms the sailboat to retrieve numbered balloons. The high score of three balloons wins the afternoon event. A good time is had by one and all during the scoring and after party. The day’s event gives appreciation of the handling of the two boating cultures. Another event is the Spinnaker Drag Race. This is a downwind event that is open to all sailboats with spinnakers. All boats must start with their spinnakers up and flying. There are three downwind gybes to the finish. Some crews handle it a professional aplomb that would be world class. Then there are others who have an “oops” that has everyone watching gritting their teeth. It is a great event for participants and spectators alike. On the Labor Day weekend, Port Washington calls. The Port Washington Rendezvous is open to all sailboats, and its free. First get a slip at the Port Washington Marina or take your chances if there is room available. Then be there on Saturday morning (8:30) for the fun to begin. A good way to get there is by doing the Port Washington Race on Friday night. The race is open to all registered PHRF boats. You do not have to be in a yacht club or registered to a fleet to do the Port Washington Rendezvous. If you don’t know your handicap Larry Mueller (father of the Rendezvous) will assign one to you. Back to Saturday morning, Bloody Mary’s and breakfast at the Port Washington Yacht Club (free). Two course races in the late morning and early afternoon (free). Party, food and drink in the late afternoon (free). See our website for the details. If you aren’t registered in the any of the five yacht clubs ( Milwaukee Yacht Club, Racine Yacht Club, Port Washington Yacht Club, Sheboygan Yacht Club and South Shore Yacht Club) that sponsor the event you will have fill out an entry application (free) and your name won’t be sold to an aluminum siding company. Stay Saturday night and sail back on Sunday, it’s a great time. Last but not least is the Mark Stever Single Handed Race. This race is open to all sail boats. Handicaps will be assigned if you don’t have one; it’s a single handed race that allows you to take another person along to help raise and lower sails only. It is a fun time and you can’t blame your crew if you don’t do well. Spinnaker Drag Race is on August 22nd. Mark Stever is on August 21st. P/S’ER is on August 14th . Port Washington Rendezvous in on September 4th. Check the SSYC website for details. Grounds Committee Report What a great summer this has been. The club's grounds are looking pretty good. Thanks to those of you who take time to pick up small debris that gets left on the grounds.I would like to thank Richard Harvey from the Grounds Committee for painting the front gates. It would be good to keep the large front gates closed as much as possible. So please close the gates when you come into the grounds or leave with your vehicle. There are some dinghy’s that do not have current stickers on them. I hope they have paid for that space. Members that don’t pay put a burden on the other members that do comply with their obligations. If monies are not paid dues may need to be increased to make up for the loss. If you see something on the grounds that needs fixing please let me know and I can put it on the list. Better yet, if you would like to take care of it talk to me and I will see what can be done. I just got off a great boat cruise up the Michigan shore to Mackinac Island. The weather couldn’t have been better. I hope everyone is having as enjoyable of a summer as Kay and I have had so far. See you on some work parties later. That’s the way we keep this club great. Manager's Report I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers who have helped out in any way this summer. As we head into autumn we are in the planning stages of some great events. Watch for details in the coming weeks. If you have any ideas for an event here at the club call or e-mail me to discuss. The bourbon and cigar evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all who attended. Our next event will be a cognac and brandy tasting in the near future. We also have plans to sample vodkas and tequilas in the coming months. With Labor Day on the horizon watch for a new schedule of our autumn and winter lounge activities including the ever popular packer game day festivities. Remember to support your club in the coming months. Your patronage during the off season is critical to our success. Make it a point to introduce a friend to the warmth and hospitality that is SSYC. House Committee News Over the last few months you may have noticed that the carpet in the club house is in very bad shape. Since the installation of the carpet we have tried to keep up with regular cleaning. As you can see the carpet is holding more stains then normal. General Manager Pat Nora is working with the necessary people to find a solution to our problem. There have been representatives from the carpet manufacture and experts in cleaning carpets looking into the problem. The carpet cleaners have conducted test areas on our carpet. So don’t be alarmed when you walk into the first floor and see a few cleaned spots. The summer is almost over but that means the football season will be starting. If you want to be a celebrity bartender during the Packer games see Ed our bar manager and he will schedule it for you.
Power Boat Fleet The summer seems to be slipping by, but we still have some fun-filled events to wrap up the season. Margarita Night will be on the 26th of August, with $2.00 margaritas. Dinner will be served at the cost of $5.00 per person, but for those who bring a "dish-to-pass", it will be "gratis." In addition Four on the Floor will be performing under the tent. Let's hope the weather cooperates and the turn-out is great!! Jim and Sally Mergener are heading up this event. Watch for an email alert for further information. Following Margarita Night is the Powerboater's Cruise to Racine, which is in the capable hands of Dick and Nancy Grabowski and Dick and Shirley Harvey. The Burger and Brown Bag Thursday Night was held on July 15th. Thanks to the Merryfields and Bluemners for taking the lead on this event. The Brew City Storm delayed the Fish On/Fish Off for a week, which ended up being held on July 31st. George and Jan Artka ran this contest, and our South Shore Grill Team that was cooking the lunch were George Graubner and Leo Wagner along with Sue Ring-Wagner. July 29th was a "Cook Your Own" Thursday event sponsored by Wayne and Lynn Happel and Dick and Nancy Grabowski. Thanks to Nancy's wit, we all learned how many sesame seeds are on a McDonald's hamburger bun. On Saturday, August 7th, Doug Reading teamed up with Big Brothers/Big Sisters for our annual boat ride and lunch. We hosted 122 "Bigs" and "Littles" for a boat ride and burgers. Our Grill Team was cooking up a storm, and they were assisted by the Knollenbergs, Grabowskis, and Bruesewitzs at the food line. Thanks to all who participated, both with donating your boats and your time to help feed the crew. This is really a worthwhile community event, and we wouldn't be able to make it a success without all the volunteers. There was a great turn out on August 14th for the Great PS'R run by Mike Dziubek. Everyone enjoyed the day on the water, with the sailors piloting the power boats in the morning, and the power boaters helming the sail boats in the afternoon. The winning team was the teams Bill and Joan Johnson (Joni-Will II) and Gary and Christa Mattson (Caveat). By the time you read this, we will have attended the Powerboater's Buffet on August 19th. Thanks to Dick and Karen Schmidt, Barry Goodstein, and Leo Wagner and Sue Ring-Wagner for taking charge of this annual event. Mark your calendars for our Ball on the 13th of November.
SS/SSS Fleet Newsby Barbara Drake, Fleet CaptainAfter race #10 on August 4, I think we have experienced every condition possible for a Wednesday Night Race. I really have to compliment and thank the race committee for keeping their cool and not throwing up their hands in frustration and giving up. In spite of the conditions, they got all the times and only missed 4 boats. I think that is remarkable and you should give them a pat on the back for a job well done. The crew of Rogue took a video of this finish and you can see it here. The results of the Spring Series are as follows:
It is hard to believe but we have also finished the summer series and actually only have 4 races left. The results of the Summer Series are as follows:
Cruising Club Updateby Don Doggett, Fleet co-CaptainOn July 17th we started a great trip to Reefpoint Marina. Basha, Witchcraft, Mariah, Mystique and Whisper were the five sailboats that all left the SSYC docks at 10:00am and headed south to Racine. Despite the lack of wind we made steady headway with lots of patience and an occasional purr of the iron jenny. The flat seas made easy work for the auto-pilot and very few cocktails were spilled. Upon arrival to the fabulous dock W3, we were greeted by many local sailors and quickly discovered there were many more dockhands then lines we could toss ashore. After tying up, the next hot spot was the cool waters of the Reefpoint pool. We all did a bit of soaking and splashing until it was close to dinner time. Afterwards 30 minutes was enough time to shower, toss on a change of clothes and start heading up the hill to the busy strip in downtown Racine. We all shared a great meal, a few glasses of wine, followed by a cool twilight stroll back down to the slips. In the morning we all left at different times and had good wind for our return trip. At the end of it all we found we gained some new friends, told some new stories and shared photos of the SS/CCC maiden voyage. The South Shore Cruising and Cocktail Club is scheduling another trip August 28th to Port Washington. There are already a few boats planning on this excursion, so if you feel the need to explore more ports before the season is over please join the party. Please contact Don Doggett at ddoggett@wi.rr.com and I'll make sure you get the details for this upcoming weekend trip. Come splice the main brace and join our flotilla! Short Bightsby Bruce Nason, Commodore![]() Starting out this month with another caution to be aware of activities on and around the Club grounds. Just last week a club member had his outboard motor stolen from his sailboat moored in the North Mooring Basin. Club security and of course safety should be everyone’s focus. We’re such an open and friendly club that it can be easy to over look some inappropriate behavior. Don’t hesitate to offer a greeting to anyone who doesn’t seem familiar with our facilities and of course report any suspicious activities to the Club Office or a Club Officer. The Packers preseason games have started and in just a few weeks the regular season and that means our Packers Sunday `Celebrity` Bartenders will be back behind the bar. We seem to have some of the same groups signing up year after year, not that that’s a bad thing, but here’s a challenge to some of you who’ve been on the other side of the bar all these years, how about getting your crew together and picking a date. Bar Manager Ed Holschuh has the sign-up sheet and GM Pat Nora has some door prizes and surprises lined up. A few of the SSYC happenings since the last Compass, a couple of SSYC Juniors, an instructor and two members took a 420 and Opti sailboats and participated in the Cudahy Public Library’s first ever Family Boat Day on July 21. The Annual Fish On / Fish Off contest was pushed back a week because of weather and the results, unfortunately, were the same as in the past, SMYC held on to the trophy. The Powerboater’s Big Brother / Big Sister boat ride and cook-out was a huge success. Powerboat Chairman Russ Berg says that he’s been told that this is the organizations major yearly event. The PS’R (Power Sail Regatta) was held August 14 and as usual was a great success. Another shipment of SSYC apparel has arrived so stop by the Club office to check out the new stuff (it might not be too early the think about Christmas gifts). It’s also not too early to schedule a Holiday Party. Dining and Banquet Manager Karen Orlovitz can help you plan a perfect event. Contact her soon before all the best dates are taken and don’t forget we no longer ‘shut-down’ in January. Auxiliary Newsby Jan-Marie Weiler If you missed the August meeting, you missed a good speaker and good food … and of course the camaraderie of our outstanding membership. Judy Mayer was with us from Outpost Foods. She talked to us about whole grains and then made hummus. So, not only did we enjoy a table of treats brought by several members, we also had homemade hummus. How simple it is to make and how good it is fresh! Judy remarked on her way out of the club that this was the most beautiful back drop she has ever spoken at. We all agree that the sight out of our windows at SSYC is the most beautiful sight in the world! On Tuesday, September 7th the Ken and Sandy Dziubek Travel Show is coming to the Auxiliary. They have taken sailing trips in various locations around the world. Come to hear if they concur with us that the best sailing is right out in our lake. Our knowledge of geography will be challenged. We will be sure to have a few laughs, if you know Kenny. Sandy is a past president and very knowledgeable sailor. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Carolyn Blackwood, hostess, would like for us all to partake of the food before and after the meeting, mostly before the meeting. Kudos go to our members extraordinaire Nancy Tucholka and Mitzi Pfoertsch for seeing the auxiliary burgee through to completion. Next time you enter the bar area, look up and admire the design. Come hear more about it at the next meeting. Nancy takes care of bringing sunshine to our members. Her personally designed cards are done with the member in mind. If you know of someone in need of sunshine, give Nancy a call. If you missed out on getting your Queen’s Cup merchandise this year, you may be out of luck until next year. Fran Aring and Pat Rakowski have done a great job of organizing the sale. We are almost out of merchandise and if you need something and don’t get it at the Corn Roast, you may have to wait until next year. We have had some great get-togethers this summer most notable the Big Brother Big, Sister outing, the P/SR (always a fun day) and now the Corn Roast. Could life at South Shore get any better? Take a look at the plantings the next time you are down at the club. Just stunning! Hope to see everyone September 7th!
Helping Handsby Carolyn NasonHere are a few helpful hints: Did you know there’s a correct way to fly our club burgee? Just make sure the star’s points are up and you’ll be ship shape. When you’re cruising, here’s a way to keep cheese from getting moldy. Apply a thin layer of butter over the cut edges then wrap and store in the fridge. The butter will “seal” the cheese preventing bacteria from growing. Fix those splayed-out broom bristles by moistening the bristles with a bit of water and wrap with a rubber band. Let it sit for a day or two and you’re good to go. Try slipping a rubber band around your car’s visor. It’ll instantly hold your parking stubs, dollar bills for tolls and even sunglasses right at your finger tips. Get the latest and greatest about all the new monster-size cruise ships at www.AllThingsCruise.com. Now that you have more herbs than you know what to do with, chop up a bunch and whip with soft butter, minced garlic and lemon juice. Use parchment or wax paper to roll the mixture into a log. Twist the ends and toss it in the fridge. It’s yummy on biscuits, veggies and even steak. Another option is to mix your herbs with a little goat cheese and broil on a baguette. Delish! Wow. Next time you’re on the hunt for something (think DVD, laptop, Kenneth Cole pumps or whatever), use your smart phone’s camera to take a picture of the bar code. This free app from ITunes will send you a bunch of competitors’ prices at stores near you and online. How cool is that! Paper towel tube to the rescue! Don’t you just hate that hanger crease? Cut a slit down the entire length of an empty paper-towel tube. Slip it on the hanger and drape your pants over it. Everyone loves shrimp; but not so much the “freezer flavor.” Get rid of it by soaking them in a mix of 1 cup boiling water, 3 cups cold water and 1/3 cup salt for every pound of shrimp. They get nice and plump and the salt removes that icky taste. Before tossing or donating an old computer, use a program to delete your files (the delete key just won’t cut it.) Use a program like Eraser 5.7 available at CNET.com. Do a quick Google search and you’ll find a ton of free ones available. And this, from PC Bob Aring (Bacchus): "After mopping the floors, I put some small, old socks on the paws of my dog. Then I let him run wild through the house. It sure speeds up the drying time!” Funny, Bob. As always, keep your hints coming.
"On Board" - Boating Safety Tipsby Gerald HussinStay Safe on the water – Be Weather wise – Listen to your marine radio on the weather channel in your area. the 24 hr reporting advises the boater on local weather as well as a future forecast for inland and marine weather. Be Prepared – Bring any extra gear that you may need in an emergency such as a flashlight, extra batteries, extra clothing, blankets, area charts, first aid kit, sunscreen and sunglasses. Is your handheld radio fully charged? Life Jackets – Is there one – properly sized - for everyone on the boat? The Jacket must be Coast Guard approved and in good condition. Remember – You cannot repair a life jacket. It is manufactured to strict standards and only the manufacturer can comply with them. Other safety gear could be jumper cables, adequate towing line, fire extinguishers, bailing bucket and audible and visible distress signaling devices. Have a Float Plan – Tell someone where you are going and when you will likely be back. Know the rules – Do you have the latest up to date State or Federal regulations. They are available at the club house. Be safe – you and your passengers – out there. Excerpted from Great Lakes Boating Double-Hand Fleetby Bruce Nason, CommodoreIt’s been said, `Third times the charm’. Our first two races were plagued by either no wind or storms but this past Friday we finally got a race in, although the last boats did have to dodge some lightning and thunder. The stalwart Race Committee volunteers also deserve thanks for braving the squall that kicked up during the last leg of the race. A tip of the hat goes to PRO John Archibald, Jerry Rakowski, Gary Mattson PC and Nello Copen. Club Photographer Chris Gribble was along to take some great photos too. The reward for everyone, of course, was Carolyn’s great post race food served up by volunteers Pat Rakowski, Heidi Gaertner, Joyce Sabinash and Jana Rakowski. We re-scored the race creating a Multi Hull Section (hint to you other ‘cat’ sailors out there). The new posted race results are; Multi-Hull Section, 1st Tri N Catch Me, Mono Hull Section, 1st Rafiki, 2nd Meltdown and 3rd Sabotage. Our next race, the shrimp, champagne and bring a dish to pass, will be September 17.
