Wisconsin Marina Association’s Clean Marina Program
Commodore Bruce Nason and Director Jim Peterson attended the Wisconsin Marina Association’s (WMA) spring meeting last week at Milwaukee Yacht Club. SSYC joined the WMA in 2009 but this was the first meeting that we’ve been able to attend since the others have been held in locations quite a distance from Milwaukee. The major topic at the daylong gathering was the WMA’s Clean Marina Project. In his welcoming remarks, WMA Chairman Jon Kukuk announced that even though WMA just celebrated its first anniversary the association has already doubled its first year goal of achieving 20 members from Wisconsin Marinas and Yacht Clubs (SSYC is one of only two yacht clubs that are currently members of WMA). The association got its start with an initial grant from the Wisconsin Harbor Towns Association and is waiting for approval other grants totaling nearly 100 thousand dollars. The WMA goal, through its Clean Marina Program, is designed to bring awareness to marine facilities and boaters regarding environmentally friendly practices intended to protect and preserve Wisconsin’s natural environment. By voluntarily utilizing the Clean Marina Guide the WMA sees the opportunity to avoid additional state and federal pollution regulation Charles May, Chairman of the Great Lakes Small Harbors Association (GLSHA), spoke of the impact of recreational Two other presentations in the morning dealt with innovations in floating docks, fiber sea walls and various insurance opportunities. An election of a Director was also held. The afternoon session keynote speaker, Tom Kroger, Superintendant of Lakeshore State Park, gave background data Prospective Member Party - April 17by Tom Gale Saturday April 17th is the date to remember for our spring “New member recruitment party”. This will be in conjunction with the “Crew Search” party in the afternoon. Live music, $5 ‘Americana’ buffet, prizes, and lot’s of fun. We are at an all time low on membership (501 regular) and it’s time for every member to come to the aid of the Club. So “All hands on deck”, because we need a very serious effort to recruit new members. People go where they’re invited and stay where they’re welcome. The number one way to expand our membership is to have good people like you invite a prospect to come down and enjoy what you’re enjoying. April is the perfect time to invite a new prospect because by the time they fill out an application, have it posted for 30 days (by-law requirement), and come before the Board for approval, it’s nearly the end of May. And what’s more fun than being down at SSYC for June, July, August, September, and October? Remember, you don’t have to own a boat to belong to the Club. Many people enjoy the “Social Membership”, and you can always find a sail boat looking for more crew for Wednesday night racing. The Power Boaters Thursday night parties are all on land, no boat needed there either. Just show up and enjoy the fun Folks, it really is crucial to increase our membership now. Take 60 seconds and jot down a couple of names and then send an e-mail or give them a call and bring a guest of two on April 17th. Together, let’s build a stronger membership for the future! From the Helm
The ‘front page’ article in this Compass was about the Wisconsin Marina Association’s Clean Marina Project. It’s a program we all need to embrace; at the meeting Jim Peterson and I attended I signed the WMA’s Clean Marina Pledge. Volunteer efforts to safeguard our environment are always preferable to increased regulations. We’d like everyone to be more aware of our responsibility to protect the environment and make suggestions on how SSYC become a leader in the effort to keep Lake Michigan the treasure that it is. On a more serious note, SSYC Junior, Andrew Hodgson, is waging a brave battle with cancer. Jim and Erica Hodgson have a web page for Andrew on Children’s Hospital’s CaringBridge website. You can share your well wishes with Andrew and the Hodgson family at; www.caringbridge.org/visit/andrewhodgson/journal. We all wish Andrew well and will keep him in our thoughts during this challenging time. General Manager Pat Nora has been with us for two months and if you haven’t met him yet duck into his office and introduce yourself. Pat says he is impressed with our staff and has been working with James (by phone), Chef Peter, Karen and Ed to keep a seamless transition. He’s also brought some new ideas and has already made improvements in some areas, especially in bar and restaurant purchasing and inventories. When I became Commodore in November I felt the biggest challenge facing us would be recruiting new members. Well, there’s been a few distractions (like hiring a new General Manager) to deal with but now it’s time we all become SSYC membership recruiters. Our budget is based on about 530 members, but we’re down about 25 from that goal. Membership Chairman Tom Gale has said many times, we are the best examples of why others should be joining SSYC. Skippers, talk to your crew and guests. We all should be telling friends about everything that goes on here between October and May, the activities and fun doesn’t stop when the temperature drops and snow covers the boats and perhaps most importantly, boat ownership is only an option. We’re not in a panic mode and we aren’t going to discount our membership (like some other clubs have) but it’s up to all of us to get the membership back to 550. Enough said. Have a safe and successful Spring and boat fitting-out. Crew Search Get Together & Partyby Helen “Cookie” Mueller PC Skippers, are you looking for crew? Crew, do you want to sail and race on Lake Michigan? If so, then South Shore Yacht Club is the place for you on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The South Shore Yacht Club PHRF Fleet will sponsor the 18th annual “Crew Search Get Together.” The Crew Search will be held from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. The “Crew Search Get Together” is when skippers who are looking for crew and prospective crew members meet. The purpose of the get together is to help skippers meet and bring new crew members into sailboat racing on Lake Michigan. Information about everyone will be collected, printed and distributed. All ages and levels of ability are welcome to attend. This year the PHRF Fleet will work with the Entertainment and Membership Committees to present an expanded Crew Search Get Together and Party. Food and entertainment will be part of the agenda. Beginning at 6:30pm a $5“Americana” buffet will be served. This will be followed by the music of the band ForgeFire at 8:00pm. Plan on attending the Crew Search and staying for an evening of food and fun! Additional information can be obtained by contacting Helen “Cookie” Mueller at cookiemueller@wi.rr.com or Rick Trisco at 481-2331.
LET’S GET TOGETHER ! APRIL 17, 2010 3:00 PM South Shore Yacht Club 2300 East Nock Street Milwaukee, Wisconsin 414-481-2331 e-mail - info@ssyc.org web site - www.ssyc.org “On Board” - Boating Safety Tipsby Gerry Hussin Have you ever wondered how or why the National Ensign should be flown or in what manner? Our National Flag, the National ensign – stars and stripes – should be raised at 0800 and lowered at sunset. It should never be displayed after sunset unless lighted. On a boat – the flag length should be 1 inch per foot of overall length of the vessel. On a mastless motorboat, the US ensign is flown from a stern staff. On a cruiser with signal mast and spreaders, the U.S. ensign is flown from a stern staff, starboard side or center of stern. On a small cruiser with a signal mast, flags are displayed the same as the cruiser, with the squadron pennant or club burgee at the bow staff. When a gaff is added to the signal mast, it is the place for the U. S. ensign when underway, when at anchor these are flown at the stern. On a sailboat, a single masted boat underway may fly the U S. ensign at astern staff or on the leach of the main sail, two thirds the length of the leach above the clew. Other flags are flown at the masthead. At anchor or in port, the U.S. ensign is flown at the stern staff. Above information from Chapman Piloting Short Bightsby Bruce Nason A cold front has moved into the Clubhouse and I’m not talking about weather or air conditioning. I’m talking beer. House Chairman George Artka’s beer tapper replacement project has been completed. Read about the update elsewhere in this issue of the Compass. Easter Brunch is a week away and starting the following Sunday the popular Sunday Breakfasts will start again in the Commodore’s Cove. General Manager Pat Nora and Chef Peter have updated and streamlined the menu a bit to provide the popular choices with quicker service. See you all on Sunday mornings. There’s an article on the Bulletin Board from the Chicago Tribune about Chicago boat owners lamenting about more fee increases in the Chicago Park District marinas. The ‘average’ cost of a slip is $3,150 plus maintenance fees. Speaking of Chicago, we’ve just received the ‘formal’ notice from Chicago Yacht Club inviting our participation in this summer’s Mac Race. Our friends at Racine Yacht Club have also sent an invitation for this year’s Hook Race. Security continues to be an issue. There was another car broken into recently on the County owned lot, this time during mid-day. Please be alert to suspicious behavior or vehicles and report it to the club office. Remember to lock your vehicle and don’t leave valuables (GPS, laptops, tools, etc. ) in plain sight. Wrapping this up, it’s mentioned elsewhere in this issue and you’ll be hearing a lot more of it; we need your help in recruiting new members. As membership Chairman Tom Gale says, SSYC members are the best source of new members for sustaining our club. We all have fun here; let’s not keep it a secret. Bring a friend or co-worker to our fun events sponsored by the Entertainment Committee, Power Fleet or Sail Race Fleets and show off the best darn yacht club on Lake Michigan. Auxiliary Newsby Jan-Marie Weiler What great entertainment we had at the March 2nd meeting! Jessica Michna from Racine presented a historical portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln. She was excellent and many of us would love to have her back in the future to do another First Lady. It was nice to see some members that have been hibernating for a few months. April will bring a few more out of hibernation. We miss you and look forward to seeing all our old friends and meeting new members. So come one and all! April’s entertainment will be an artist that does glass bead wiring. You don’t want to miss this. Cookie Mueller passed out fliers for the Queen’s Cup T-shirt design contest. We invite all members and their families to enter designs. Send entries to the SSYC Office to the attention of the Auxiliary. The deadline is May 1, 2010. If you need more information, pick up a flier next time you are at the club. You could also call Cookie for more information. Now that the Compass is online, Auxiliary members think it might be nice to highlight a member a month like the Life Lines column does in the Compass. We are looking for an auxiliary member that would like to do this. Talk to President Bonnie Merryfield if you would like to volunteer for this. Any other suggestions are always welcome and Bonnie is just the person to field those to. Upcoming events include the last Wednesday night program on March 31 at 7:00 PM. The program is entitled Journey to the Stars. We can sharpen our star gazing skills for those dark skies while cruising or racing across Lake Michigan. Put the next Auxiliary meeting, April 6th at 7:00 PM. on your calendar. There is sure to be a sign-up for the May 4th Life Member and Past Presidents Dinner. If you miss the meeting, be sure to call the club office to sign up for the dinner. We will try to identify some photos for our historian and will need all members’ assistance. Enjoy the longer days! Manager's Messageby Pat Nora Well here we are in the middle of March, and with the warmer weather we’ve experienced, activity in and around the club is on the increase. Friday nights have continued to be busy and with the success of our last “Prime Rib Saturday” member use continues to be strong. Watch for more unique and enjoyable dining events as we move into the season. As I’m sure you realize, the key to long term growth and prosperity in any private club is member participation and support. We are very fortunate here at SSYC to have high levels of both. So let’s continue to build on the great start we have already experienced this year. Our calendar is filled with a variety of events sure to appeal to one and all. Now is the time to make a resolution to introduce a friend to all that SSYC has to offer. Vow to introduce the warm friendly atmosphere to a guest[s]. Share a meal, take advantage of the beauty that is our “Great Lake” or just hang out and enjoy the camaraderie here at the club. Join your fellow members by sponsoring a new member. Let’s make 2010 a year to remember. Thank you. Membership Meeting Highlightsby Bruce Nason, Commodore SSYC Routine and uneventful would be the best words to describe the March membership meeting. Officers and Directors presented their reports to nearly 75 attentive members. Our new General Manager Pat Nora was introduced and warmly received. The Commodore encouraged members who haven’t met Pat yet to make sure they introduce themselves to him on their next visit to the Club. Vice Commodore Dave Wehnes gave the Treasurer’s report and gave a brief overview of the year end financial report and 2010 outlook. Financial Secretary Jerry Kedziora reported that preparations are underway for the Annual Audit. He also said a photographic record is being made of all of our facilities and property for our insurance records. Membership Chairman Tom Gale reported that new member recruitment should be everyone’s major effort this season. He encourages everyone to bring a guest (a potential new member) to the Crew Search/New Member Party April 17. Bob Aring PC, Chairman of the Nominating Committee asked that members interested in serving in a leadership role of the Club submit a letter to the Club Office. Grounds Chairman Jim Peterson said that work is underway creating a new gaff for the flagpole and that the flagpole will be taken down for inspection and painting after the launch is complete. He also said that the Gardening Subcommittee has begun work and interested persons should contact Pat Rakowski. Dry sail and dinghy storage contracts are being updated. Have you had an ice cold beer from our new beer tap system? That was how House Chairman George Artka led off his report. We now have eight draft beer taps in the Lakeside Lounge and four in the Lily E Room. Slips Chairman Nello Copen’s report reminded everyone about the Slip Committee meeting Tuesday, March 23 and that the slip work party is set for 9:00 AM, April 10. May 1 is the date for the start of boat launching and that Thursday nights will again be ‘spar night’ with no boats scheduled for launch. Jerry Rakowski, Waterfront Chairman, said the last boats will be in the water by May 22 and that the grounds clean-up work party is scheduled for that date. Luke Radomski Entertainment Chairman outlined plans for the April 17 party, Review of the Fleet June 12 and a possible ‘fish boil’ in October. Special Events Chairman Vice Commodore Dave Wehnes reported that the results for the 2008 race were still under appeal. He said that plans are well underway for this year’s race. The NORs will be mailed out April 1. Also this year the Beneteau 40 Association will include the Queen’s Cup as part of their Seasons Series. There was no ‘old business’ and under ‘new business’ the Commodore briefly reported on a recent meeting of the Wisconsin Marina Association. He also reminded everyone that the popular Sunday morning Breakfasts will start April 11. The meeting was adjourned and everyone celebrated the return of Port Washington smoked chubs to the buffet. Used Jr. Boats For Saleby Helen “Cookie”Mueller PC The Junior Foundation is happy to announce the purchase of several new boats for the Junior sailing program. Recently purchased were two 420 boats with dollies and 8 Opti Trainer boats. The new boats are a very welcome addition to the aging Junior fleet. The addition of new boats means that there are several used Junior boats for sale. Two 420 boats and seven Opti Trainer boats will be offered for sale to the SSYC membership. The 420 boats were purchased in 1993 and the Opti Trainer boats were purchased in 1998. Each boat sold will include all of the necessary boat equipment, including a set of used sails. The asking price for each of the 420 boats is $500 and the Opti Trainer boats have a “make an offer” bid request for each. Each boat will be sold “as is” to the highest bidder. To bid on a boat, write your name, the name of the type of boat that you are bidding on and the bid amount on a piece of paper. Seal in an envelope and label Junior Boat Bid. Drop off the bid at the SSYC office. Bids will be taken May 1st through May 31st. The bids will be opened on June 1st. The highest bidder will get first choice of a boat to purchase. Anyone interested in seeing the boats that are for sale should contact the Junior Advisor, Mike Blackwood. He can be reached at firewood@wi.rr.com or at 414-281-6803 Helping Handsby Carolyn Nason Here are a few helpful hints: Help protect Lake Michigan. MMSD is having another Medicine Collection Day on May 8, 2010. Bring in prescription and over-the-counter medications, ointments, sprays, inhalers, creams, vials, even Fido’s medications. For Milwaukee County residents the drop site will be at Miller Park, Miller Lot by the ‘Sausage Haus” from 9AM to 1PM. For Kenosha, Ozaukee and Waukesha locations and times, go to mmsc.com or call 414-272-5100. Boats will be going in soon and we all want to make sure they’re ship shape. Here is a cool product that says it will remove that mildew/mold smell in your cabin. It’s called Kanberra Gel and it’s made from Tea Tree Oil. You know, the natural antiseptic stuff. They say you can place it in your air handling unit or just leave it out in the open. Either way, it will clean the air and get rid of that musty odor. More details are available at kanberragel.com. Do you know a woman who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer? Let her know about this. The service is called Cleaning for a Reason. This organization will arrange FREE housecleaning - one time per month for four months while she is in treatment. A doctor’s note verifying treatment is all that’s needed. Check out their website: cleaningforareason.org for more information. Wow, there really are angels in this world. Store your SOS pad in the freezer. Yup, not under the sink, the freezer. After using, just toss it in a re-sealable bag. No more rusty steel wool pads as the cold air freezes the moisture, stopping rust. Just thaw under warm water before using. Can you teach an old dog…? Been awhile since you were in driver’s ed class? They’re teaching kids something totally different now. Here’s a way to completely eliminate blind spots when you’re driving. And it really works, too! While in park, adjust your rear-view mirror as you normally would. Next, lean way over to the left so that your head touches the driver’s window. Adjust your left side-view mirror so you can see the back corner of your car. Then lean to right about the same distance, and set your right mirror. Now, when you see a car approaching in the rear-view mirror, it instantly appears in your left side-view mirror. Violà! No more blind spots. Tom and Ray (Click and Clack) from NPR’s Car Talk have a step by step tutorial on their website: cartalk.com. Go green and save money. Vinegar makes a great substitute for your dishwasher rinse agent. (Think: no more JetDry.) Just fill the compartment with plain white vinegar. You’ll be spotfree and it costs so much less. Rub a little dirt on it. Well actually butter. Treat your nails to a winter pickme - up by rubbing a bit of butter on each cuticle. Wear cotton gloves overnight and wash with soap and water in the morning. It’s an easy way to nourish and revitalized your hands. Emily Burrows keeps us smiling with a couple more “tips”: Putting a mouse trap on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from hitting the snooze button. You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape. As always, keep your hints coming. House Updateby George Artka Last year the House Committee budgeted money for the replacement and addition of a new beer tapping system for the club. This system was needed due to the constant failure of the original system. We had line failures which resulted in loss of beer and the old air system just did not give you a very cold beer I am pleased to announce that the job is complete. When we looked at our needs for a new system, the House Committee decided that we needed to replace the tapping system at Lakeside Lounge bar and add a new system for the Lilly E Room bar on the second floor. We have now added a new four tap beer system for the Lilly E Room, and upgraded to an eight tap system at the Lakeside Lounge. Members will now be able to enjoy a nice cold tap beer for lunch or dinner at both of our bars. Bar Manager Ed advised me that with the addition of extra tappers he will be adding specialty beers throughout the year. Grounds Committee Updateby Jim Peterson We are getting close to the start of boating season with slips opening April 10th and boat launch starting the 1st of May. There will be a lot of activity on the grounds. This is a good time to think about safety. Be careful with ladders, a fall could end your boating season before it starts. Do not leave items around that you or someone else could trip over. Think Safety. We are in the going to take down the Flag Mast for maintenance (paint and new hardware where needed). This will take place right after grounds cleanup May 23 or 24. We should be able to get it back up in a week. The Gardening Committee is headed up by Pat Rakowski and they are in the process of planning it out. Any donations of plants if they are of the type they need or other consideration would be appreciated. The Dry Sail Storage and Dinghy Storage contracts will be going out around the 1st of April. There are some changes in the contracts. One in particular is the change of liability from $100,000 to $300,000 on the Dry Sail Contracts. We are also going to replace the used oil tank. It hasn’t failed yet and we would like to replace it before it does. Some of the side curtains for the tent that are badly worn will be replaced. But the tent itself still looks to be in good shape. Be careful to protect yourself and others when you are working on the grounds. There are a lot of possible dangers on the grounds during launch season. Gambling Get Away Weekendby Ken Dziubek The 2010 Gambling Getaway was a huge success. The trip was held on March 13-14 in Green Bay, WI Oneida Casino and Radisson Hotel. The bus trip from South Shore Yacht Club to the casino was fun filled with great camaraderie and fellowship. The trip leaders were Dave and Nancy It was said that this trip had the most amount of winners than any of the other trips with 17 of the 49 participants reporting being above the water line on the way back from Green Bay. The hospitality room had a surprise visit by two Hooter Girls (Nancy Tucholka and Sandy Dziubek seen with Dan Danowski). Scotty Lawrie almost had a new Jeep automobile as the lights and horns flashed away on the slot machine that he was playing. The officials reported it as a malfunctioning machine and denied Scotty the main prize.
Life Lines - Reflections of a Life Member at SSYCby Bruce Nason John ‘Tom’ Broderick’s family moved to Bay View when he was 15 so it was only natural that a love of Lake Michigan would begin. In fact he About that time Tom hooked up with the Emery family and really got the sailing bug crewing on their boat. The first boat of his own was a Seafarer 22, Sundancer, which he kept on a mooring South of the club. In 1978, at the urging of Wally Fuhrman, he joined SSYC. He and Sharon mostly ‘day-sailed’ Sundancer but about that time he really got into single-handed outings and like a few other adventurous souls around here would venture across the lake, only Tom did it in the 22 footer. Most crossings were uneventful, however there is one that he vividly remembers. With darkness approaching a squall line with winds of 50 knots and huge seas tested his mettle. In 1990 Tom and Sharon bought their present boat, Bella Donna, from Ron and Jo Haas. The Broderick kids, Mike, Jessica and Danielle all grew-up in the SSYC Juniors and son Mike, who is a SSYC Non-resident member, worked as Dockmaster for several years. Tom has done his share of Queen’s Cups, Hook and Mac Races, usually crewing for Bill Steinert, Karl Krueger or Ron Haas. Although never serving on the Board, he’s been an active member on committees in the past, mostly Membership and Slips. As an MPS teacher he also had time to do some boat delivery, but since retiring as a Phys-ed teacher at Humboldt Park School he looks forward to enjoying day sails with grand-kids. When asked what his Club membership has meant to him he says SSYC is his favorite place in the world, “If I could only be one place, it would be here.” Power Fleet Newsby Russ Berg On a sunny Sunday, with Valentine’s decorations everywhere, the Power Boater’s Brunch was a great success. There was almost capacity attendance, and a money maker for the Power Boater’s Committee. This was a very well organized event hosted by Jim and Sally Mergener. The staff scheduling made this event run very smoothly. Thanks to all who participated, either serving or eating. The Gambling Get-Away, hosted by Ken Dziubek, Dave Tucholka, and the Hooter Girls was a smooth get-away and a wonderful weekend. It was economical provided you didn’t gamble the mortgage money. From sweet rolls and bloody marys to viewing the movie “The Hangover” on the way home, this was a super fun event. We should have had two bus loads. There was even a birthday cake for Pat Randa. Congratulations to our winners!! The next event is the wine tasting, which is being hosted by David & Sue Benscoter, Barry Goodstein and Dan & Donna Danowski. This event runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and we have been informed by our new manager, Pat, that the wine selection looks terrific. Between the appetizers and the wine, this should be a great event. Watch the web site for the upcoming events, as the summer season is about to take off. Any interest in participation, call Russ Berg or the club office. QC T-Shirt Design Contestby Helen “Cookie” Mueller PC The South Shore Yacht Club Auxiliary is sponsoring the annual Queen’s Cup T-shirt contest. A cash prize of $150 will be given to the person who submits the winning t-shirt design that will be printed on the 2010 Queen’s Cup tshirt. Everyone who submits an entry will receive a $5 coupon good toward the purchase of 2010 Queen’s Cup merchandise. Following are the official guidelines for the 2010 Queen’s Cup T-shirt contest: • The race will be to Grand Haven, Michigan on June 25, 2010 • The design needs to coordinate with the color of the shirt – Light Ash
• The design is limited to three colors of ink. No fluorescent colors.
• The design will be displayed on the back of the shirt. The Queen’s Cup logo will be on the front of the shirt. • The design needs to include the following: “Queen’s Cup [sm]”, South Shore Yacht Club or SSYC and the year 2010
• The contest is open to Club members and their immediate family.
Get your ideas down on paper and submit them to Club Manager, Pat Nora. Your entry does not need to be an artistic masterpiece. It is the basic design that is important. An artist will take the design that is selected and ready it for printing. The deadline for entries is May 1, 2010. Any questions may be directed to Helen “Cookie” Mueller at cookiemueller@wi.rr.com. Don’t hesitate - get your “winning entry” in today.
Publications Newsby Bob Aring PC Over the past few months, I’ve mentioned that there is a new format that we are looking at for the on line edition of our newsletter, the Compass. We are getting close to unveiling this new format and we are anxious to get your feed back. While this Compass is being produced in the current format, we will be looking to reproduce the same issue in the new format sometime in the coming week or so. Our current Compass is designed for an 8.5” x 11” printed page and it poses some limitations for the reader. As we move to an electronic presentation we will not have these limitations. Watch for an announcement soon and feel free to e-mail me with your comments - baring@ameritech.net. Also, a reminder to members to please contact the Club office to keep e-mail and postal mailing information current. Our e-blasts and communications to members is dependent on having the correct information. Queen's Cup Planning Continuesby Dave Wehnes The 72nd running of the Queen’s Cup Race is just a few months away and the Special Events Committee is working hard to make it a great event. The race will start on the evening of June 25th with a finish in Grand Haven. 200 boats participated last year and we expect an even larger fleet in 2010! The race will feature a short-handed fleet again this year. Twenty-nine boats participated in the fleet in 2009, and we hope to have even more in this year’s race. The Notice of Race, entry form and other race documents will be ready for mailing on or near April 1st and will be sent to about 500 skippers with addresses on file. Additional copies will be available in the club office as well as being downloadable from our website. The race will be preceded by the annual Queen’s Cup party on Thursday evening, starting at 6:00 PM. A buffet dinner will be served, with an open bar. Music will be provided by Gizzae. The band is from Chicago and has come to SSYC for Margarita Night as well as last year’s QC party. The Grand River Sailing Club will be hosting the finish. They have arranged for the Eagles Club to provide breakfast, showers at the YMCA, and evening entertainment. Mount Gay will be providing red hats for the race and Goose Island Brewpub will be sponsoring the khaki hats. (“312” is one of the Goose Island brands.) The committee is working to obtain other sponsors for the event, and your suggestions and assistance are welcome. T10 Fleet Updateby Chris Moll As we welcome in spring and look toward the 2010 sailing season, the T- 10 fleet is working hard to ensure we enjoy another great season of racing. We currently have 9 active boats on Milwaukee Bay and we have spent a considerable amount of time this winter planning and We have implemented two new ideas this season in hopes of making our Saturday racing more attractive. First, we are moving from our traditional first starting slot to the last starting slot. The idea here is to maximize our race time and minimize our down time on the water. Our hope is that we will start later in the morning and finish at about the same time as usual. This will also allow some extra time in the morning for the breeze to develop. The second idea that we will implement is to change the format of our August 7 Rum Cup regatta. We will abandon our typical match racing scheme this year and revert back to fleet races. In addition, we will encourage other skippers and crew from around the bay to come on board and test drive our T-10’s during the Rum Cup event. That’s right, we want to encourage all sailors that have not had the chance to race on a T- 10 to get on board and try out some one-design racing. As always, we will sponsor a cookout/rum party after racing where you can tell us what you think. Congratulations to Sally Miles Heuer and Susan Stickles on their purchase of local T-10 Helldiver! We are all very excited to see new energy being put into the Helldiver program. We would also like to thank long-time members and avid fleet supporters Lyn & Mary Schuette for the many years they have given to our fleet. We wish Sally and Susan good luck and also hope to see the Schuette’s on the water too. If one-design racing and great camaraderie are what you are looking for this summer, then the T-10 fleet is definitely for you. Please feel free to contact me if you have interest is getting involved in our fleet as we would love to have you join us. Launch Time Approachesby Jerry Rakowski The Launch season will soon begin and here are some important dates and reminders for members to keep in mind. The Slips and piers will open for the season on April 10, the Gas Dock will be installed by that date. The first We plan on launching ten boats from the North aisle and on May 2ten boats from the South aisle. After both aisles are cleared, any boat with an exposed bow, stern or sides may be launched. Please help us and be ready. Take note, if any boat next to you is moved, you are next to be launched. Work together, call your neighbor and coordinate with him/her for a smooth and orderly progression of launching the boats. Something new this year – any boat moved from one storage spot to another spot will be assessed labor costs associated with the move. The costs assessed will be different for each boat since issues involved for each move may be unique for each boat. This additional fee is above and beyond what is included in your storage contract. This year we’re also returning to Spar Night Thursday, no boats will be scheduled to launch on Thursday nights, just spars. During the spring launch, when using water please install new rubber gaskets for your hose connections and don’t leave water running. Water left running costs your Club money. Always use a nozzle, this will help cut costs. Remember to clean up your area while working on your boat and after you have launched and let’s get a head start on our grounds clean up. Don’t forget to take a break every so often and patronize your club for food and beverages during the launch season. Our goal is to launch all the boats on the grounds in three weeks. Launch ends on May 22, 2010 and this gives members a week to relax before the Memorial Day weekend. |
